Who we are
magne.tools is a free, non-commercial hobby project run by Ugur Kaya, a private individual in the Netherlands, who is the controller of the personal data described on this page.
For any privacy question or request, write to privacy@magne.tools.
In short: no cookies, no accounts, no analytics and no ads. We keep what you search for a limited time to answer you and to make search better, and we don't store your IP address with your searches.
What we process and why
When you search, your text goes to our server, which finds matching tools and sends them back. This is what we keep, and for how long:
| What | Why | Kept for |
|---|---|---|
| Searches you send: the text, the tools we showed, how we found them and the page language. No IP address and no user ID. | To find where search falls short and improve it. | 90 days |
| Daily search counts: the search text and how often it was asked each day. | To see what people look for and where the catalog has gaps. | 90 days |
| Cached answers: the answer to a search, stored under its text. When project search is available, also whether a longer search describes a whole project. | To answer the same search again quickly, for everyone. | 7 days |
| Project descriptions: when you use project search, the description you give (or the part of it behind each need) and how we found the result. No IP address. | To find where project search falls short and improve it. | 90 days |
| Cached project answers: the answer to a project description, including the description and quotes from it. | To show the same answer again quickly. | 7 days |
| Shared project answers: when you press Share, the project description, its answer, the rows you marked, the page language and the date. No IP address. | To show the answer to anyone you give the link to. | 1 year, or until you delete the link |
| Rate-limit records tied to your IP address: the times of your recent requests (searches, project searches, shares and calls to our MCP endpoint), in a record named by your IP address (for IPv6, by its /64 network). | To keep the service available and stop anyone from overloading it. | Deleted after 1 hour without requests |
| Technical request logs at Cloudflare: records of requests to the site, which can include your IP address. | To run the service and fix faults. | Up to 7 days |
| Your browser's saved tools: the tools you marked with "I already have this". | To remember your tools between visits. | Until you clear it. It stays in your browser and is never sent to us. |
| Your browser's share links: the links you made with Share, each with its delete key. | So you can delete a link later. | Until you clear it. A key is sent to us only when you delete its link. |
Your text is sent while you type, as soon as you pause, not only when you press Enter. It is kept like any other search. Please don't type personal details, such as names, email addresses or anything about other people, into the search box.
Legal basis
We rely on legitimate interest (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)) for everything above. Our interest, per purpose:
- Answering your search and caching answers: giving you the result you asked for, quickly, while keeping a free service affordable to run.
- Improving search from the 90-day records: making the results and the catalog better for everyone.
- Sharing a project answer: showing the answer to the people you chose to send its link to, as you asked.
- Keeping the service available with rate limits and technical logs: protecting the service from abuse and overload, and finding faults.
You don't have to give us any data. But without text there is nothing to search, so the search can't work without it.
Your browser and links
- Saved tools. The tools you mark with "I already have this" are kept in one
localStorageentry in your browser (magne.owned). It never leaves your browser. To remove it, clear this site's data in your browser settings. - Share links. The links you make with Share and their delete keys are kept in a second
localStorageentry (magne.shares), so you can delete a link later from the same browser. A key leaves your browser only when you press "Delete link". - The tab's history. Your search and what the page showed are kept in this tab's history, so the back button works. They go away with the tab's history.
- Links carry your search. Shared links and the language switch add your search to the address as
?q=. Anyone you send such a link to sees the search, and it reaches our host, Cloudflare, as part of the page address.
We use no cookies. We store two entries in your browser, each written only when you ask for it, so no consent banner is needed:
- your saved tools, when you mark a tool;
- your share links and their delete keys, when you share a project answer.
There are no third-party scripts or fonts: fonts and icons come from our own site.
Shared project answers
When project search is available, you can share a project's answer with Share. We then store a copy of it: your project description, the answer we stored for that description (its needs and tools, with the needs that were opened on it), the rows you marked, the page language and the date. We don't store your IP address or the tools you marked as yours with it.
- Anyone with the link can see it, including your whole project description. Leave out personal details before you share.
- It is not listed or indexed. The link is unguessable, and we ask search engines not to index it. Apps you paste it into, such as chat apps, fetch the page to show a preview, which includes the first sentence of your description.
- It is kept for 1 year, then deleted by the daily clean-up.
- You can delete it at any time with "Delete link", in the browser you shared it from. Anyone else with the link, or you from another browser, can ask us to delete it at privacy@magne.tools; include the link.
Who else sees it
A few services help us run magne.tools. They only get what they need for their part.
- Cloudflare hosts the site, the database and the rate-limit records, so your searches and your IP address pass through it. Its request logs, which can include your IP address, are kept for up to 7 days. Cloudflare is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and uses standard contractual clauses for other transfers. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
- TypeSafe (its model Jev helps judge which tools fit) receives your search text. When project search is available, it also receives the project descriptions you send, and longer searches to tell whether they describe a whole project. TypeSafe processes them in the US under its terms. It may keep requests for the period set in its terms, and it says it does not train or fine-tune models on them. See TypeSafe's privacy policy and terms.
- OpenAI is used for project search only. It receives your project description and the parts we split it into. We send them with
store: false, so OpenAI does not store the responses. OpenAI may keep abuse-monitoring logs for up to 30 days. Transfers to the US rely on the standard contractual clauses in OpenAI's data processing addendum. See OpenAI's privacy page for API data. - DuckDuckGo gets your search only if you click "Search the web", which opens a DuckDuckGo search for it. See DuckDuckGo's privacy policy.
- Tool providers see your visit when you follow a link to their site. Their sites have their own privacy policies.
How long we keep it
As long as the table above says, and no longer. A daily clean-up deletes the data in our database once that time has passed; rate-limit records delete themselves after an hour, and Cloudflare deletes its logs on its own schedule. Only counts with no search text in them may be kept longer.
Your rights
You can ask us for access to your data, to correct it, to erase it or to restrict how we use it. You can also ask to receive it in a portable form where the law provides that right. Write to privacy@magne.tools.
You can object at any time to processing based on legitimate interest, which is all the processing on this page. Tell us, and we stop unless we have compelling reasons the law accepts.
Searches are not tied to a name or account, so we can only find yours from what you tell us. In your request, include the text you searched for and roughly when you searched it.
If you think we handle your data wrongly, you can complain to the Dutch data protection authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, or to the authority in the country where you live (see the list of EU authorities).
No automated decisions
We make no automated decisions about you that have legal or similarly significant effects. The results are suggestions of tools, nothing more.
Changes and language
When we change this text, the date at the top changes with it. This page is also available in Turkish; if the two differ, the English version prevails.
