About

Earth Engine is Google's geospatial platform with a multi-petabyte catalog of Landsat, Sentinel, MODIS and other datasets. Compute NDVI, time series and zonal statistics on Google's servers from Python, JavaScript or REST, then export results. Free for verified noncommercial use; commercial is paid.

What you can do with it

  • Compute NDVI and vegetation time series for any area on Google's servers
  • Analyze Landsat and Sentinel archives for land cover or deforestation change
  • Export satellite images or region statistics to Drive or Cloud Storage

Get started

  1. Register a Google Cloud project for Earth Engine
  2. Choose verified noncommercial use or a paid commercial plan
  3. Run pip install earthengine-api, then ee.Initialize(project=...)

Example

import ee

ee.Authenticate()
ee.Initialize(project="my-project")

field = ee.Geometry.Point(5.12, 52.09).buffer(500)
image = (ee.ImageCollection("COPERNICUS/S2_SR_HARMONIZED")
         .filterBounds(field).filterDate("2026-06-01", "2026-09-01")
         .sort("CLOUDY_PIXEL_PERCENTAGE").first())
ndvi = image.normalizedDifference(["B8", "B4"])
print(ndvi.reduceRegion(ee.Reducer.mean(), field, 10).getInfo())
