Open-source geocoder for OpenStreetMap data

Price
Free, open source

None, send a User-Agent

About

Nominatim is the open-source geocoder behind OpenStreetMap search. It turns addresses and place names into coordinates and back. The public server is free but allows at most 1 request per second, so heavy users run their own instance.

What you can do with it

  • Turn an address or place name into coordinates
  • Reverse geocode coordinates to the nearest address
  • Self-host a geocoder on your own OpenStreetMap import

Get started

  1. Send a User-Agent that identifies your app
  2. Stay under 1 request per second on the public server

Example

curl -H "User-Agent: my-app/1.0 (you@yourdomain.com)" \
  "https://nominatim.openstreetmap.org/search?q=Unter%20den%20Linden%201%20Berlin&format=jsonv2&limit=1"
