- Access
- OAuth token (client ID + secret)
About
The Reddit Data API gives OAuth access to subreddits, posts, comments, votes and messages. It is free for approved non-commercial use at 100 queries per minute per client. Every app needs Reddit's explicit approval, and commercial use or AI training needs a separate written agreement.
What you can do with it
- Read hot, new and top posts and comment threads from subreddits
- Submit posts and reply to comments from a bot or app account
- Build moderator tools that act on reports, modmail and removals
Get started
- Request Data API access and wait for Reddit's approval
- Create an app to get a client ID and secret
- Send a unique, descriptive User-Agent with every request
Example
# 1) Get an app-only token (HTTP Basic with client ID and secret)
curl -X POST https://www.reddit.com/api/v1/access_token \
-u "$REDDIT_CLIENT_ID:$REDDIT_CLIENT_SECRET" \
-A "web:com.example.myapp:v1.0 (by /u/your_username)" \
-d grant_type=client_credentials
# 2) Call the API on oauth.reddit.com with the access_token
curl "https://oauth.reddit.com/r/programming/hot?limit=5" \
-H "Authorization: bearer $REDDIT_ACCESS_TOKEN" \
-A "web:com.example.myapp:v1.0 (by /u/your_username)"Details
