About

The Slack API lets apps post messages, react to workspace events and slash commands, and run bots inside Slack. It is for teams building alerts, internal tools and chat bots. An app must be installed to a workspace, and it only gets the scopes an admin approves.

What you can do with it

  • Post messages and alerts to Slack channels from your app
  • Build bots that answer mentions, messages and slash commands
  • Receive workspace events such as new messages and reactions

Get started

  1. Create a Slack app and add the chat:write scope
  2. Install the app to your workspace
  3. Copy the bot token (xoxb-...)

Example

curl -X POST https://slack.com/api/chat.postMessage \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SLACK_BOT_TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-type: application/json" \
  -d '{"channel":"C123ABC456","text":"Hello, world."}'
